Counselling & Psychotherapy

I hold a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology and have been a practicing counsellor for 18 years. I am available to meet with anyone in the community who is experiencing psycho-emotional concerns: anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship issues, trauma, etc. and wish to make real and positive changes in their lives.

Trauma - past and present

I  have a special interest in trauma, especially early years (childhood) trauma and neglect. Most of us has heard of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). These are normally short-lived or one incident traumas e.g. a car crash. However, there are traumas which are ongoing like childhood trauma, domestic violence, incarceration, etc. which impact the mind and body in a much more severe way. This is called Complex PTSD (CPTSD). Emotional neglect is often not considered as a 'trauma', however, where a child might have food and shelter, when their emotional needs are not met, this can result in different issues later in life: anxiety, depression, disconnect from your self, feeling little self worth, etc.

Therapy Sessions
My Approach
logo2.jpg

We all know our bodies best but in times of strife we sometimes forget that the answers are within ourselves. As a trained Acceptance and Commitment therapist, I use a strength-based, values-based approach to my counselling work. I assist clients to determine their goals and then make a plan to commit to these goals. In turn, there are things in life we can not change easily so I provide clients with ways and means to accept what life brings our way. In doing this, I rely on mindfulness practices of awareness of our thoughts without judgement, focusing on the here and now, and self-compassion. This is usually short-term therapy.

If you have experienced trauma, recent or childhood, which is causing present day issues and concerns, I use different psychotherapeutic techniques such as Internal Family Systems to help you reconnect, integrate and reaffirm your present life. For those with Post Traumatic Distress or Complex PTSD, we always aim for Post Traumatic GROWTH and wisdom. This tends to be mid to longer term therapy.
