Counselling & Psychotherapy
logo2.jpg

I am available to work with anyone who would like to make positive changes in their lives. Common issues that present in my clinic are: anxiety, depression, trauma, addictions, grief and loss, fears and phobias, relationship and/or family conflicts.

In our sessions, I draw on different therapies depending on your needs and preferences such as: Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Mindfulnessness, Internal Family Systems, EMDR, and Somatic Psychotherapies. So what you may expect is us working collaboratively to determine what you would like to change, how you will go about bringing forth these changes, and what strategies and mindsets you might need to accept things that you cannot change. Mindfulness practices such as being aware of our thoughts and feelings without letting them overwhelm us and self-compassion and self-care are emphasised. We will always go back to your values and strengths as the bedrock for positive outcomes.

If you are looking for a more transformative/internal healing therapy, I provide two types of experiential therapies: Internal Family Systems (IFS) and EMDR. I always start with IFS and when appropriate we may move to EMDR.

Internal Family Systems Therapy

Internal Family Systems (commonly known as IFS) is an experiential psychotherapy where you become aware of and heal the parts of yourself that are holding you back. IFS has three types of parts: Managers, Firefighters, and Exiles.  Managers and Firefighters protect our Exiles, the most vulnerable and wounded parts, usually younger, from getting activated and hurt any further. Manager parts ensure you behave in a certain way so that the Exiles can stay hidden away, e.g. controlling, striving, perfectionism, self-criticism, people pleasing. Firefighters are reactionary parts that come into our system when the Managers are failing to protect you adequately. Examples of Firefighters are anger, addictions, OCD, self-harming behaviours, eating disorders, even suicidal thinking. Exiles are the most vulnerable and usually the youngest parts that hold wounds of sadness, fear, shame, grief, abandonment/rejection, depression, etc. Often there is a 3-way vicious cycle with the parts such as: You drank/smoked/gambled/watched porno (Firefighter).  “You are so weak. Why didn’t you stop!” (Inner Critic). Feelings of shame arise. “I’m a loser” (Exile). Unique to IFS is the focus on our true self (what the founder Richard Schwartz simply calls the Self) which has many qualities such as the 8 Cs: compassion, curiosity, creativity, clarity, courage, confidence, calm, connectedness. When we are in Self, the protector parts will give space for you to heal the Exiles who hold the deep emotional wounds.

Psychiatric Disorders: If you have been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder such as Psychosis/Schizoprenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Dissociative Identity Disorder, you would need to contact a clinical psychologist. My clinic does not have the capacity to work with these disorders.

NB: I do not see clients involved in the following: Criminal Justice System or Department of Child Protection.
